Rose Quartz – The Heart Stone

My most recent blog on Shaman’s Blog was about forgiveness as an act of self-love. So, for today’s Nature blog, Rose Quartz, seemed a logical choice for discussion. It’s also a stone I find myself using often in journeys with clients who are working with issues of self-love, self-esteem and lack of nurturing.

Rose quartz is often called the “Love Stone” or “Heart Stone.” It is a stone of unconditional love. Its high energy opens the heart chakra and enhances love in virtually any situation, family, platonic, romantic, and most importantly, self-love. (Why is self-love most important? Because without loving ourselves, we can not fully love another.)

Rose quartz deposits have been found in Madagascar, India, Japan and Brazil, as well as in South Africa and South Dakota in the USA. It’s color ranges from very pale translucent pink to deep pink. Since Rose Quartz doesn’t occur naturally in many quartz formation, it’s less often found as crystals, than in a large formation.

For you astorology buffs out there, rose quartz is linked to the star sign of Taurus,to Libra as a secondary stone and to both the sun and the moon. Numerologically, it resonates to the number 7. Rose quartz is a receptive stone and tied to both the elements of fire and water.

Of course, rose quartz is known as a heart chakra stone, but it is also linked to all the upper chakras, the thymus, throat, brow or third eye and the crown. Rose quartz brings the vibrations of the upper chakras into alignment with the heart chakra so you can begin living from your heart.

Rose quartz is known as a stone of “unconditional love,” as its principal long-term effect is to reawaken the heart and restore our sense of the innocence and wonder, reminding us that all true love is unconditional. It’s what I’d call a self-healing stone as the energy it radiates works more to benefit those who wear or carry it than it does (as was more traditionally believed) to attract love and lovers. (Back to the above paragraph — if we love ourself, we will have room to attract love.)

Emotionally rose quartz brings gentleness, forgiveness, compassion, kindness and tolerance. It helps balance your emotions and heal emotional wounds and traumas, even grief, bringing inner peace and calm. Rose quartz helps remove jealousy, fears, resentments and anger, as well as any overwhelming or unreasonable guilt or shame. I often find it helpful in the journey process as it can also help heal and release childhood traumas, neglect, and lack of love, by enhancing inner awareness, self-worth and self-esteem. Rose quartz can even assist in mending relationships with family and others.

Rose quartz is like “Chicken Soup for the Soul”. It’s great to wear when you are feeling despondent and need to feel loved or deeply cared for, especially when you are “ill” on any level.

A word of caution about rose quartz. Working with rose quartz energy can be a lot like working with a good therapist, it can take time before you experience a real breakthrough, and sometimes revisiting painful old experiences and emotions. The energy tends to dig in and move these emotions through so we can truly understand what self-love. So if you choose to wear or carry this stone, it’s best to be patient, don’t push, and be ready to expand your own capacity for love — for self and others.

On the physical plane, rose quartz, worn over the heart, strengthens the physical heart and circulatory system. Placed on the thymus, it can aide with chest and lung problems. It also helps heal the kidneys and adrenal glands. Rose quratz can be helpful for headaches, migraines, ear, sinus, throat, and spleen problems, as well as issues of depression, and addictions. Rose quartz is also helpful with sexual dysfunction, especially if due to self-esteem/worthiness/nurturing issues. It may also aide in increasing fertiltity and to aide with pregnancy and childbirth. Rose quartz is said to be helpful for supporting brain functions, making it helpful with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and senile dementia as well as reducing wrinkles and slowing signs of aging (Hmm. Help for us Baby Boomers out there 🙂 )

In the magical and spiritual realms, rose quartz is often used to attract love, and for love spells. Rose quartz can be helpful for dream recall and dream work. It can also used to ease the process of dying by allowing the person to fully experience and trust the unconditional love of Spirit.

We encourage you to find a “heart stone” that calls to you and explore the depths of unconditional self-love.

Until next time-

Mitakuye Oyasin (A Lakota prayer reminding us we are all related),
